Residents across east and south east Staffordshire are being asked to give their views on proposals to centralise hyper-acute stroke services for patients.

In line with nationally agreed best practice, the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is proposing for all hyper-acute stroke services to be delivered at the Royal Derby Hospital.

Patients would be treated in a specialist Hyper Acute Stroke Unit for the first 72 hours of care, before being moved, as appropriate, to Queen’s Hospital Burton or other local services for follow-up care and rehabilitation.

To give patients and the public an opportunity to have their say on the proposal, East Staffordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is holding an eight-week consultation from Monday 10 June to Sunday 4 August.

A single referral point for Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIAs) would also be established as part of the proposal, allowing for a seven-day service to be extended to the whole population covered by the new trust. TIA patients who would have presented at hospital over the weekend would be able to access preventative treatment within 24 hours, instead of waiting until Monday.

Weekend patients would also benefit from rehabilitation and therapy provision after a stroke seven days a week at both the Burton and Derby sites with additional therapists available. Patients admitted into the Royal Derby Hospital would receive stroke specific therapy input at the weekend. These changes have been designed to drive several significant patient health benefits.

There are several ways you can have your say on the proposal including an on-line survey, email the CCG at This email address is being protected from spambots.
