Strategic Planning


Strategic planning is at the core of commissioning activities for the CCG and uses a 'holistic' approach by assessing what patients really need from services, addressing any gaps in the provision of those services and looking at new ways of procuring provider services.

The commissioning team supports the implementation of the Operational Plan, which is the CCG's future vision for coordinated and patient-centred care in Cannock Chase.

The focus of the Operational Plan is to improve the health of local people, deliver high quality health services, ensure value for money and tackle health inequalities – whilst making sure that everyone is treated fairly and has equal access to services that will make them well. The Operational Plan sets out what the CCG will do locally to achieve this and how that work is aligned with broader national NHS priorities.

The team also manages relationships with key partners in the local health and social care economy, to deliver improved and seamless services, and provide better overall health care outcomes for patients.

The commissioning function is also responsible for service redesign, using the latest clinical research, education and innovation, to develop pathways and improve patient experience.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Production and delivery of the Operational Plan
  • Management of relationships with local authority and public health teams
  • QIPP (Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention) programme delivery
  • Strategy for wider health economy Business case development and agreement
  • Strategic commissioning for out of hospital contracts (non-acute)
  • Procurement research and education
  • Service reviews and pathway redesign
  • Strategic commissioning for mental health services
  • Business case development and agreement.

The team is also responsible for the delivery of the Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) programme, which is a Department of Health project designed to deliver quality improvements in NHS care and to make efficiency savings by 2015/16.
