As the cold weather is setting in across Staffordshire, NHS Leaders are advising local people on how to stay safe and healthy.
With temperatures falling slips and falls become more likely especially during wet, cold and icy conditions.
Here are some helpful tips to stay safe this winter:
- Spread sand/salt on icy surfaces including walkways, work areas and steps
- Wear sturdy boots/shoes with a good tread that helps to grip the surface
- Consider putting the activity off until conditions improve
- Walk slowly and carefully
- Keep shoes, boots steps and pathways clean and dry. Take the time to clean off any mud and leaves or ice and snow before going out.
The NHS is reminding people that if they are unlucky enough to take a tumble it is not always necessary to visit a GP or go to hospital. A lot of minor sprains and strains can be treated safely at home. Usually the best course of action for minor sprains and strains is to visit a local pharmacy who can advise you on what best action to take to manage the problem.
Dr Mo Huda, a GP and Chair of Cannock Chase CCG said: “If you are unsure where to go for the right medical attention, call NHS 111
for fast and free expert advice. Your local pharmacy can also advise you on over the counter remedies to ease pain or swelling.
“This time of year elderly relatives or neighbours can become increasingly isolated, as they are worried about slipping on the ice. We are encouraging everyone to be a good neighbour and ask if they are warm enough and coping in the cold weather. The simplest things could make the biggest difference to their health, including offering to get some food shopping or collect a prescription, or drive them to an appointment if they are worried about slipping and falling on the ice.”
