Book now – training sessions for type 2 diabetes patients in Staffordshire

Five clinical commissioning groups* (CCGs) in Staffordshire have come together with Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Partnership NHS Trust (SSOTP) to organise a number of free education sessions for newly-diagnosed or existing patients in the area who have type 2 diabetes.

The ‘My Diabetes’ sessions will help patients to better manage their condition and understand the implications to their lifestyles. It will also include more information about a further educational course, called DESMOND, which offers support in managing their diet, foot care, eye care and much more.

The number of people with type 2 diabetes continues to rise, making it one of the biggest healthcare challenges currently faced by the NHS. Figures from Diabetes UK show the cost to local NHS services as a result of diabetes is currently £205 million, predicted to increase to £252 million by 2020 and £328 million by 2030.

People with diabetes spend an average of just three hours with a health professional each year, according to figures from the Department of Health. Dr Bhushan Rao, clinical lead for diabetes, said: “Education can improve how well diabetes is controlled, lead to fewer complications and reduce the number of hospital admissions related to diabetes. These sessions are a chance to meet and share experiences with other diabetes patients, and explore ways to look after yourself to make life with diabetes a little easier.”

The 90-minute ‘My Diabetes’ sessions will be held in a range of venues across the Stafford, Cannock, South Staffordshire, Lichfield and Tamworth districts from 1 February.

Sarah Orme, Diabetes Specialist Team Leader for SSOTP added: “It is a life changing situation when you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. We want to support patients to improve their health for the long term. The My Diabetes session will allow people to explore ways to understand and manage their condition. It also offers insight into what services are available, such as access to specialist services in diet, the importance of exercise and having healthy feet, as well as treatments they are entitled to such as blood tests, eye checks and the flu vaccination.
